Abstract|
This subject takes an ecological approach to exploring the interactions between young children and the environment in which they live. The relationships between child and family, family and early childhood service an family and local community are examined. Carrying out a community project will allow students to study these relationships in the context of their guided professional experience placement. the professional experience aspect of this subject is designed to take into account students' previous experience in both under 5 and school settings. The placement will take place over a period of 20 days. |

Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of professional philosophy and the pedagogy required for teaching very young children and gain the competency and interpersonal skills required;
- be able to discuss the relationship between the experiences of a group of young children and their homes, early childhood services and areas in which they live;
- be able to discuss some of the implications of government funding of children's services and the experiences of children, their families and educators;
- be able to apply a range of skills and prior experiences to the development of a small focused community project;
- be able to extend and refine their teaching and management skills gained during previous professional experience placements and from studies at univeristy to articulate the role and responsibilities of being an early chikdhood teacher;
- be able to use reflective practice skills gained on previous professional experience placements to review their teaching philosophy.

SyllabusThe subject will cover the following topics:
- Introduction to Professional Experience - information on placement, organisation,
- The roles of the Associate Teacher, Subject Coordinator and University Liaison Person
- Understanding the contexts of services for 3 – 5 year old children - developing a service
- Documenting child learning and observations of children - ways of recording teaching and learning, using observations to plan, links to specific theories of curriculum planning
- Planning and programming in early childhood services - understanding the different formats and thinking about planning learning environments for young children, indoor, outdoor, freeplay, individual and whole group experiences
- Gaining knowledge of setting up engaging and intellectually challenging inclusive learning environments for young children
- Guiding behaviour - understanding behaviour and management strategies, developing a supportive environment for children
- Review personal and professional attributes required of quality teachers through development of Professional Experience goals
