Abstract

This subject builds on understandings of the nature of pedagogical practices that encompass teaching, learning and assessment. Students will undertake a 25 day professional experience where they will be expected to integrate theory and practice in classroom management issues while exploring a range of curriculum areas. Students should develop their understanding of current frameworks for thinking and talking about teaching, in particular productive pedagogies and quality teaching, and develop their reflective practice skills.

Students will explore the collaborative nature of teachers' work while undertaking their professional experience placement through team work related to curriculum and foundational studies.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- have reflected upon and addressed the implications for their practice that have arisen from evaluations from previous professional experience placements
- be aware of a range of teaching and learning strategies and successfully apply that knowledge to appropriate content knowledge in a K-6 classroom
- be aware of a range of strategies and effective communication skills for managing classroom environments, including behaviour management and professional relationships and be able to apply that knowledge in a K-6 context
- be able to demonstrate their capacity to work collaboratively with colleagues
- understand, and be able to apply, the models of productive pedagogies and quality teaching
- be able to design learning experiences that integrate issues of diverse learners with attention to at least two other curriculum areas
- demonstrate growth as a teaching professional in relation to the Graduate Teaching Standards and their critical reflection
- have successfully completed a 25 day school placement as assessed by the Professional Experience Assessment profile.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- Preparation for professional experience placement, including developing professional knowledge and skills
- The collaborative nature of teacher's work through engaging in professional dialogue with lecturers and peers on campus and school-based teacher educators
- The complex and diverse nature of school and community settings.
- Pedagogy, curriculum & assessment: teaching and learning strategies
- Frameworks for thinking about teaching, including productive pedagogies and quality teaching
- Reflective practice
- Professional placement.
