HST311 Local History in Context (8)
Abstract| The subject focuses on the production and presentation of local histories in Australia and on ways in which histories are appropriated and tailored to the needs of particular audiences. It emphasises European and North American influences on professional historians, archivists and curators, and the vitality of the native Australian antiquarian tradition among custodians of community memory, particularly local museums and historical societies. It gives particular attention to debates on local history's ability to complement national historical narratives. |
