INF536 Designing Spaces for Learning (8)

Abstract

This subject is designed to extend understanding of the complex relationships between space, place and learning pedagogies in the design of innovative, adaptable spaces for learning. After critical reading and research, students will be able to challenge traditional assumptions in order to understand ways to transform the design of the learning environments. Innovative ideas for facilities and spaces will provide the context for developing and adapting classrooms, libraries and general facilities.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate a broad knowledge and understanding of the influences of educational and other discourses upon the design of learning and teaching spaces in the digital age;
  • be able to articulate and synthesise current pedagogical trends for the interdependent relationships between physical/geographic and digital/online/virtual spaces and places for learning;
  • be able to demonstrate an understanding of the importance of creative and experiential spaces for learning and teaching;
  • be able to recognise the role and importance of technical and physical design standards in enhancing interoperability, usability and sustainability;
  • be able to examine and analyse learning space design, theory and practice to inform planning;
  • be able to articulate and reflect on the importance of collaboration with relevant stakeholders within the school community in designing spaces for learning; and
  • be able to define and apply key elements in planning or developing new learning environments for the school community.

  • Technical and physical design standards
  • Connecting physical and virtual learning spaces
  • Creative culture and makerspaces
  • Experimental spaces, fab labs and makerspaces
  • The learning commons and embedded librarianship
  • The future of learning-centred built environments.
