Abstract

This is an introductory subject for students who wish to learn about computers and information technology and its application. This subject also provides students with a general grounding in computing practices and principles. It provides some scope for students to pursue aspects of computer applications in their own field of interest.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- understand the principles and be able to apply some of the fundamental practices of computing from a microcomputer platform;
- identify and use appropriate application software for a specific task;
- identify the ways in which computers are affecting society;
- be able to use computing terminology appropriately; and
- relate computer and information technology application to their field of interest.

- Introduction - The system unit - Storing data - Input/Output - Data Communications - System Software - Application Software - Word Processing and presentation software - Multimedia - Spreadsheets and data analysis - Database and info systems - The Internet and the Web - Computer ethics, privacy and security
