Normal course duration

Full-time 1.5 years (3.0 sessions)

Variations to course duration are only related to recognition of prior learning factors, previously described.

  • Normal course duration is the effective period of time taken to complete a course when studied Full-time (Full-time Equivalent: FTE). Students are advised to consult the Enrolment Pattern for the actual length of study. Not all courses are offered in Full-time mode.
  • This course may utilise a three session per year teaching calendar. Students should consult the Enrolment Pattern for availability of subjects in Session 3, or contact their Course Coordinator.

    All students must have an undergraduate degree, diploma or equivalent in midwifery.

    Students must have or be eligible to receive Authorisation to Practice as a Registered Midwife in Australia.

    Where a student has obtained their tertiary qualifications outside of Australia and is eligible to apply for registration as a midwife in Australia but English is not their first language, they will be required to meet the English Language Requirements of the Nurses and Midwives Board prior to enrolment. They must complete four International English Language Testing System (IELTS) academic modules obtaining a minimum of 7, on each of the individual bands of reading, writing, speaking and listening.

    Credit CSU Credit Policy

    Students enrolling in the program with an undergraduate midwifery degree (or equivalent) and no other relevant qualifications complete 96 points. Students entering the course with an undergraduate midwifery degree (or equivalent) and an additional related qualification e.g. a Bachelor of Nursing receive 24 points credit. An additional, maximum 8 points credit  is availble for students enrolling with extra qualifications / experience e.g. Lactation Consultant Certification or experience as a midwifery facilitator for midwifery students.  Students entering the course with a Postgraduate Diploma of Midwifery receive 64 points credit.

    Graduation requirement

    To graduate students must satisfactorily complete 96 points.

    Course structure

    The course structure comprises 3 components:

    There are 5 core midwifery subjects (40 points), 2 core research subjects (16 points) and elective subjects (40 points).

    Core Midwifery subjects can be studied in any order but must include:

    MID452 Midwifery as Primary Health Care 1
    MID524 Challenges in Midwifery Practice
    MID525 Midwifery as Primary Health Care 2 (only available in '90 sessions)

    Students select 40 points from the following electives:

    Students may elect to exit the course at this stage, once four of the above 5 subjects have been successfully completed, with a Postgraduate Diploma of Midwifery or continue.
