Abstract
Introduction to Rural Management is a subject that provides students with an introduction to rural management as a discipline. It examines the roles of thinking styles and skills in management decision-making and how these are applied to managing simple and complex issues for sustainability. The subject is also seen as an introduction to university studies and, as such, students will be supported in their development of academic writing skills and basic quantitative analysis. |

Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to integrate the essential written skills required to confidently and effectively communicate in a university environment, including extended software application skills, a range of genre structures, referencing and captioning;
- be able to effectively source and critically evaluate descriptive statistics and quantitative information to analyse an agricultural issue;
- be able to interact effectively and professionally in an online environment;
- be able to interrogate the differences between the reductionist and systems approaches to management and how they are used in agricultural management;
- be able to examine core sustainable values, how they might be achieved, and how these are linked to systems thinking;
- be able to apply the Sustainable Agri-Management model to the analysis of the structure and operation of an agricultural business;
- be able to appraise the impact of various management functions and behaviours on effective management;
- be able to determine the role of learning in management with particular attention to learning style;
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of complexity in decision making; and
- be able to describe and contribute to the debate on contemporary change issues impacting on agriculture, especially sustainability. |

Residential SchoolThis subject contains a compulsory 2 day residential school.
The residential school is part theory and part practice. Students cover the theory of management as outlined in their Study Guides but also visit local farms to develop an applied knowledge base around management practices.
