ART512 Critical Reading and Research Subject (16)

Abstract

This subject will focus students on the critical exploration of specific arts issues by providing an opportunity for concentrated research into the literature of their chosen field under the guidance of a supervisor. Students may investigate art historical
issues or choose to explore theory and practice of art as it relates to other disciplines such as literature, history, psychology, religious studies, sociology or cultural studies.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
Fully understand the nature and value of a literature review;
Have an enhanced knowledge of the relationship between theory and practice in their own field;
Understand the theoretical issues underpinning their chosen field;
Be able to critically evaluate the relationship of their chosen field to wider critical contexts.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • This subject will cover topics as proposed by the student and negotiated with and approved by, the specific supervisor. They include:
  • development of a topic proposal
  • compiling of an annotated bibliography
  • draft stages of a major paper
  • completion of a major paper
