ASC181 Veterinary Office and Hospital Procedures (8)

Abstract

This subject introduces you (the student) to the operational procedures of the veterinary clinic and hospital. You will learn the skills required as a veterinary receptionist, including the coordination of appointments and the admission and discharge of (animal) patients. You will learn a range of communication skills to deal with real life situations. This subject will assist you to develop  self reflection and self assessment skills in order to develop a strategy for professional lifelong learning. This will be achieved through online quizzes and formal academic writing assessment tasks.  This subject includes online modules, 5 days of workplace learning in a veterinary clinic and a 3 day residential school (conducted on the GOTAFE campus at Wangaratta, Victoria) during which you will begin to develop practical skills essential for a veterinary technologist.

Restricted to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Veterinary Technology.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to communicate effectively with a range of people including (future) clients, peers and supervisors;
  • be able to appropriately manage customer complaints;
  • be able to provide grief management services to clients (pet owners in particular);
  • be able to provide appropriate advice on various aspects of animal care;
  • be able to prepare and process clinic correspondence;
  • be able to maintain veterinary pharmaceutical and stock inventory; and
  • be able to prepare and maintain clinic financial and monetary processes.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • Introduction to veterinary reception
  • Coordination of appointments and patient admission and discharge
  • Customer service and advising clients on animal care
  • Clinic office procedures
  • Effective team communication
  • Dealing with difficult clients - conflict, bereavement

Residential School

This subject contains a compulsory 3 day residential school. The purpose of the residential school is to ensure students have the competencies that veterinary technologists are expected to have (based on industry needs). The program will include tutorials and practical classes associated with the following: common veterinary office software programs, using tools to monitor customer/client satisfaction, client management skills, basic financial management and managing veterinary pharmaceutical and stock inventory.

Work Place Learning

This subject contains a Compulsory Workplace Learning component of 5 days duration. The workplace learning is to be undertaken in a veterinary clinic and involves the student gaining practical skills associated with the operating procedures of the veterinary clinic and hospital, for example, reception duties and record keeping. Specialised Resources

Students will be required to undertake 5 days of workplace learning in a veterinary clinic for which they will be responsible for their own travel and accommodation. Travel and accommodation may also be required to attend a 3 day, compulsory residential school (for both internal and distance education students) conducted on the GOTAFE campus at Wangaratta, Victoria.
