Abstract|
This subject will extend students into the multi-million dollar veterinary pharmaceutical industry and the adventure of drug discovery. The work of bodies that approve, regulate and monitor the use of therapeutic agents in animals will also be examined, particularly wildlife and horses. The principles of drug action will be examined at an advanced level and the major classes of therapeutic agents will be investigated. Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to explain the principles and practice of drug discovery and development
- be able to explain the principles of drug action and pharmacokinetics
- be able to describe the major classes of drugs used in animals
- be able to expound, argue or state a rational view on complementary therapies
- be able to describe how these drugs can be used to accelerate/maximise speed and growth and generally enhance animal performance
- be able to design clinical trials
- be able to interpret and present clinical trial data
- be able to develop a rehabilitation program for injured animals including horses and wildlife species
- This subject is clearly differentiated from the paired subject, ASC306, in that the learning objectives and assessment clearly reflect the higher level offering appropriate to Master level learning.

SyllabusThe subject will cover the following topics:
- The pharmaceutical industry - overview of the animal therapeutics industry in Australia
- Drug discovery and development. Drug development - what each phase entails, how long the overall process takes and difficulties involved
- Regulatory issues- legal authorities, drug scheduling, safe use of S8s, drug residues
- Principles of pharmacology including pharmaceutics, principles of pharmocokinetics, pharmodynamics, dose response studies, drugs and systems therapeutics
- Clinical trials trial design and imlementation. Drug assays for plasma, urine and tissues, data analysis and presentation of results
- Wound management, care and rehabilitation of the injured horse - Alimentary system
- Management, care and rehabilitation of sick and inuured wildlife
- Alternative therapies: evidence-based evaluation of alternative therapies used in animals
- Dose calculations and drug handling
