ASC470 Ruminant Production (8)
Abstract
The subject involves an in-depth examination of extensive ruminant production systems as well as some of the more intensive aspects of production where relevant to particular species (excluding feedlots). The focus is largely directed towards herd/flock management, with particular emphasis on husbandry, production efficiency, reproduction, and market/profit drivers. |

- be able to formulate and justify breeding programs for different ruminants
- be able to demonstrate how to manage herds/flocks to maximise production efficiency
- be able to demonstrate describe the various constraints to optimal production for different ruminant species and/or breeds
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of appropriate husbandry techniques, when they are performed and why they are performed
- be able to utilise computer software for the management of nutrition and reproduction of grazing animals
This subject is clearly differentiated from the paired subject, ASC370, in that the learning objectives and assessment clearly reflect the higher level offering appropriate to Master level learning. |
