Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to objectively assess and monitor horse health;
- be able to identify and mitigate risks to horse health in various Australian settings;
- be able to apply an evidence-based approach to horse health care;
- be able to course and critically appraise the equine scientific literature; and
- be able to communicate scientific horse health information to peers, non-equine professionals as well as to lay people.

SyllabusThe subject will cover the following topics:
- Module 1: Horse housing and its impact on horse health. Topics include stress, welfare, behaviour, stereotypies and respiratory disease.
- Module 2; Horse relocation on the impacts on horse health. Topics include transport, biosecurity and disease spread, assessing the need to drench, and rotational grazing to control internal parasites.
- Module 3. Assessing and monitoring horse health and the provision of first aid. Topics include key indicators of horse health, record keeping, horse time budgets and topical wound care.
- Module 4. Preventative horse health care in Australia. Topics include an evidence-based approach to vaccination, and preventing colic, sore backs, gastric ulcerations and respiratory disease.

The Residential School for ASC513 will provide a hands-on approach to the theory taught.
