Abstract
This subject is designed to provide a firm foundation for developing skills in scientific communication. Students will learn information, digital and academic literacy skills relevant to their discipline of study. The subject will also introduce students to critical analysis of the scientific literature and the scientific method. This subject will also raise awareness in students to professional and ethical issues relating to health and medical sciences. |

SyllabusThe subject will cover the following topics:
- Communication skills: library familiarisation, literature searches, written communication, scientific report writing; academic literacy skills (referencing, avoiding plagiarism)
- The scientific method and an introduction to experimental design (including critical analysis of the scientific literature)
- Laboratory mathematics
- Working safely in laboratories and other workplaces
- Professional and ethical issues: patient confidentiality, patenting, research ethics, professional development, professional associations and membership.
