Abstract
This subject is the first of a series of three subjects which focus on employability skills and career planning. The subject has a particular emphasis on building professional knowledge of working in a business environment and developing employability skills in the areas of communication, team work, problem solving and self management. Students may have the opportunity to gain practical experience and develop their employability skills through a placement with a host organisation; by undertaking a project or higher duties in their existing workplace; or, in agreed circumstances, by undertaking a range of structured learning activities. |

Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to identify personal examples of key employability skills, evaluate where personal skills require development and create a plan of action to show how skills will be developed;
- be able to discuss the relationship between learning and career and life development, and apply this personally;
- be able to research, appraise and explain how paid and non-paid work relates to society and the economy;
- be able to identify personal career and life choices, go on to develop a strategy to achieve these, begin to apply them and appraise their efficacy; and
- be able to modify personal career and life choices according to changes in personal and environmental influences.

- Communication including types of business communication and negotiation
- Teamwork and relationships in work and life
- Problem solving and assertiveness
- Self management and learning
- Planning and organising
- The role of reflective practice
- Locating and using information effectively to aid personal career development and networking
- Understanding the relationship between self, work, society and the economy
- Making career enhancing decisions and the role of mentors

Work Place LearningThis subject contains a Compulsory Workplace Learning component of 5 days duration.
Students are given the opportunity to develop their employability skills through 35 hours of activity completed as: a work placement with a new host organisation; a new project or higher duties undertaken with a current employer ; or, in agreed circumstances, structured learning activities.
