CHP103 Contemporary Issues in Aboriginal Health (16)

Abstract

Factors contributing to Aboriginal Health and wellbeing in Australia today are examined including communication issues, lifestyle and community practices, emotional and spiritual harmony, gender and substance abuse.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
* describe the importance of effective communication, and the means of interpreting messages in Indigenous and non-Indigenous cultures
* analyse the role of communication in health care delivery in Indigenous society
* describe how communication affects, and is affected by, issues (eg. education, lifestyle, health status)
* demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the following issues and Indigenous Australians: education; lifestyle practices; emotional and spiritual harmony; gender; substance abuse; violence

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
* Verbal and non-verbal forms of communication in Aboriginal communities. * Communication, community participation and health and well being. * Aboriginal health and the mass media. * Communication and health care delivery. * Influences on health status of Indigenous Australians (eg. education, lifestyle practices, gender).

Residential School

This subject contains a compulsory 12 day residential school. Residentials will provide students with intensive support with lectures and tutorials providing the studends with enough support to achieve satisfactory subject performance outcomes.
