COM218 Organisational Communication (8)

Abstract

This subject examines internal communication as acts of management, corporate processes and culture, and media production. It examines the perspectives of management, employees, shareholders and other stakeholders. The subject covers leadership, change, culture, employees, communication channels, diversity, and alternative and future workplaces using functional, interpretive and critical paradigms. Students develop skills in internal audience analysis, communication strategy and planning, and presentations.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate a knowledge of theories of organising and management, and their relationship to communication.

- be able to demonstrate an understanding of a range of stakeholder perspectives that influence communication in organisations.
- be able to describe the role of culture in organisations
understand a wide range of organisational and management concepts and jargon.
- be able to demonstrate practical planning and presentation skills.
- be able to demonstrate skills to design and evaluate strategies in organisational communication.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
Functional and interpretive communication. Theories of organisations and organising. Organisational structure and information flow. Alternative and future workplaces. Business planning models. Organisational culture. Leadership and change communication. Internal communication channels and employee communication. Intercultural communication. Interdepartmental communication. Organisational and communication effectiveness meetings, time management, multi-tasking and resumes.
