COM527 Cultural Performance Research (16)

Abstract

This subject examines the main research methods used in cultural event design and site specific performance. These include both qualitative and quantitive methodologies that focus on audience participation and response. Combined methods including Survey questionnaires as well as case study, grounded theory, interpretative ethnography and other forms of evaluative research are also considered. The subject critically examines and applies these methods in the student's own practice. The underlying theoretical position of the participant/researcher in qualitative research methods and design are also examined. A series of potential research methodologies are examined and critiqued and a survey of the appropriate research literature is carred out using database and online techniques.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate an understanding why research in cultural performance is conducted
- be able to gain an overview of different methods that may be employed in researching performance issues
- be able to demonstrate an understanding how research in cultural performance is designed and conducted
- be able to judge when each of these research methods is appropriate and how each may be applied to performance situations
- be able to read and understand research literature
- be able to critique research and research reports

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- qualitative methodologies and research design: data gathering types including interviewing, focus groups, and observation - decision-making in qualitative research designs - issues of evidence and data analysis in qualitative research: methods of analysis, including computer-assisted techniques. Secondary research. - commissioning research and writing reports on qualitative data - critique of qualitative research - foundations of quantitative research: sampling theory, research questions, measurement, reliability and validity - decision-making in quantitative research designs - data analysis techniques in quantitative research, including computer-assisted techniques - commissioning research and writing reports on quantitative research - critique of quantitative research - convergence techniques: qualitative barriers to quantitative research designs; foundational issues; sampling and generalisability - industry case studies
