DOH201 Oral Health Practice 2A (12)

Abstract

In this subject students will develop the skills and knowledge necessary for oral health therapists. Students will have also developed an understanding of, and refine their skills in treatment planning, dental occlusion, clinical dental hygiene practice as well as the skills associated with dental therapy practice. Students will also develop a more detailed understanding of oral physiology and how it impacts on dental care.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

# be able to undertake a comprehensive investigation of the dental and medical history of a patient in a simulated setting;
# be able to conduct a comprehensive dental examination including examination of the teeth, the temporamndibular joint and other intra- and extra-oral tissues;
# have developed skills in documenting disease of the hard and soft tissues of the oral cavity;
# be able to identify appropriate instruments and select materials and medicaments to perform basic dental procedures including but not limited to examination and fissure sealants;
# be able to implement the preventive focus of modern dentistry including a deep understanding of the concepts of minimal intervention;
# be able to perform a range of hygiene and prevention procedures including but not limited to subgingival scaling impression taking and a periodontal examination;
# have developed beginning skills in reading dental radiographs for dental examination and diagnosis;
# be able to explain the principles and theories of human communication;
# be able to apply skills necessary in interviewing;
# be able to demonstrate an understanding of local anaesthesia techniques;
# be able to demonstrate skill in taking, processing and interpreting dental radiographs
# be able to demonstrate skills in recording of occlusion and malocclusion and an understanding of associated concepts of malocclusion;
