DOH211 Oral Health Anatomy (8)

Abstract

Students will undertake a clinically relevant and systematic program of learning in the functional anatomy of the head and neck. There will be a strong emphasis on structure and function as it relates to dentistry with a special focus on local analgesia relative to craniofacial anatomy and the nervous system. Students will also be introduced to the concepts of exodontics and pulp therapy especially in the context of local anatomical considerations.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to interpret and use anatomical terminology correctly
- be able to describe the key anatomical musculo-skeletal features of the head and neck
- be able to demonstrate knowledge of the osteology of the craniofacial skeleton
- be able to demonstrate knowledge in relation to the identification of the anatomical position and relationships of the major salivary glands and the major vessels and nerves of the head and neck region
- be able to describe the topographic anatomy of the external face, neck and scalp
- be able to describe and demonstrate the correct anatomy related to the different sites and techniques of dental local anaesthesia
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of anatomical considerations relative to the extraction of teeth.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- Introduction to anatomical terminology and methods of studying the human body - Overview of human embryology and the germ layers - Review of the gross anatomy of the limbs, abdomen, mediastinum, thorax and extracranial skeleton - Topographic anatomy of the face and scalp - Topographic anatomy of the mouth - Muscles of the head and neck - Anatomical structures in the neck - The muscles of mastication - The anatomy of the tongue and floor of mouth - The anatomy of the palates and fauces region - The osteology of the craniofacial skeleton - The brain and motor and sensory nerve pathways - The autonomic nervous system - Cranial nerves of importance in dentistry - Local anaesthesia
