DOH251 Dental Clinical Practice 2A (12)

Abstract

This subject is designed to provide students with the opportunity to undertake a clinically relevant program of learning in functional anatomy of the head and neck and to continue to develop their basic dental skills in simulated and actual clinical environments. The anatomy component of the subject will cover the skeletal, muscular, vascular and nervous tissue components of the head and neck with a strong emphasis on function as it relates to dentistry and a special focus on pain control and administering local anaesthesia. The clinical component of the subject will have a focus on patient examination and introductory treatment planning as well as simple restorative dentistry and periodontal treatments (including preventive dentistry).

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
# be able to identify the bones, features and joints of the skull and portions of the vertebral column and thorax;
# be able to describe the three dimensional structure of the cavities within the head and neck;
# be able to describe the arrangement, disposition & relations of the structures that contribute to the integrated function of specific regions of the head & neck;
# be able to describe the course, distribution & functions of the peripheral nerves pertinent to dentistry;
# be able to define the course and distribution of the major blood vessels that supply the head and neck;
# be able to explain the functions of deglutition with particular reference to the functions of relevant anatomical structures
# be able to describe the detailed structure and function of the oral cavity;
# be able to identify and select armamentarium to perform simple dental procedures;
# be able to demonstrate developing knowledge and skills relevant to the provision of simple safe local analgaesia;
# be able to describe the location, structure, function of the major skeletal, muscular, nervous & vascular components of the larynx, pharynx, palate, oral & nasal cavity.
# be able to demonstrate continued and expanded simulated performance of a range of operative procedures (plastic materials)
# be able to demonstrate familiarity and basic competence in a clinical dental setting.
