DOH302 Oral Health Practice 3B (32)

Abstract

In this subject students will finalise their skills development in preparation for graduate practice as competent dental therapists and hygienists. This subject will focus on more complex treatment needs of patients integrating the knowledge learnt to date.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
# be able to identify and implement oral health promotion initiatives;
# demonstrate a capacity for active participation in the prevention of dental disease in the broader community through health promotion activities;
# be able to proficiently perform an extensive range of treatment and preventive procedures within the codes of practice of the oral health therapist in a range of settings;
# be able to demonstrate use of relevant patient management theories and strategies;
# be able to proficiently plan treatment options and referral;
# have demonstrated ability to engage in management of the day to day running of a dental surgery with regard to day planning, patient flow and record
# be able to implement policy and procedures to maintain a healthy and safe work environment.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
The subject will cover student clinical demonstration of all scopes of oral health therapy practice at graduate level and under supervision  including:- *  routine skills in dentistry listed under dental council legislation for oral health therapists *  appropriate referral for comprehensive cases *  high levels of effective communication with patients *  emphasis on implementation on high levels of health promotion preventive strategies and models of behaviour change
