DOH551 Introduction to Dental Implants and Basic Restorative Implantology (16)

Abstract

The first module will introduce the participants to the concepts of implant dentistry. The history and development of implant dentistry will be covered. The scientific basis of osseo-integration will be covered. The second module will introduce the participants to the concepts of restoring dental implants and the concepts of treatment planning the placement of implant supported prostheses from a restorative perspective. The third module of this subject will introduce the participants to the concepts of placing implant supported prosthesis in the edentulous mandible.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
-Be able to outline the history and scientific basis of dental implants.
-Be able to describe the components and nomenclature used in implant dentistry.
-Be able to demonstrate understanding of the concepts of osseointegration.
-Be able to demonstrate understanding of the different designs of dental implants and the implications of these designs in restoring implants.
-Be able to perform an examination and diagnose the suitability of patients for the provision of implant supported prostheses.
-Be able to discuss alternatives to implant dentistry.
-Be able to select appropriate treatment options for partially edentulous patients.
-Be able to describe the nomenclature and components used in the restorative phase of implant dentistry.
-Be able to describe the restorative complications and their management involved with implant supported prostheses.
-Be able to take an abutment level impressions.
-Be able to fabricate a temporary implant supported crown on a model.
-Be able to describe the problems of a lower denture in the terms of function and patient comfort.
-Be able to describe the problems of loss of alveolar bone loss following extraction of teeth.
-Be able to describe the rational for and the advantages of the provision of an implant retained full denture.
-Be able to outline other treatment modalities for the treatment of the edentulous mandible

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
The components and nomenclature used in implant dentistry will be introduced. The limitation of the use of dental implants will be discussed. The implications of a patient?s medical history in the provision of implant dentistry will be discussed. Participants will be supplied with models with implants in place. Practical sessions will be organised and surgical guides can be fabricated. The implications of different implant designs will be discussed. The use of implants with internal and external connections will be discussed. Impression techniques used in plant dentistry will be covered. Practical sessions will include the taking of impressions on models, pouring models from the impressions and fabrication of temporary restorations. The use of implants to aid in the stabilisation and retention of a lower full denture will be discussed. Different retention units will be discussed and displayed. Maintenance of the full lower implant retained will be covered.
