EEB105 Health and Safety (8)

Abstract

This subject introduces students to practices that establish safe and healthy education and care environments, together with models of health education that encourage safe, active and healthy habits in young children. In preparation for students' professional experience, there is a focus on best practice in childcare settings, covering health policies, disease prevention, occupational health and safety, and infant care routines. Issues specific to Indigenous Australian education are included in this subject.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- have examined health and safety practices within early childhood
settings, with a focus on the needs of young children from birth
to 12 years and the staff who provide care and education
programs;
- have developed an understanding of the basis for ensuring the provision of a safe
hygienic learning environment and the development of healthy
eating habits, with due consideration given to cultural differences
and individual needs of the young child, as determined by the
National Childcare Accreditation Council, NSW State Regulations
for early childhood services, NSW Risk Assessment Tool, and NSW Personal Development, Health and Physical Education K-6 Syllabus;
- be able to understand and apply basic caregiving procedures for infants and sick children and maintain practices to prevent transmission of disease;
- be able to identify the skills, knowledge and values that underpin a
healthy lifestyle and apply a variety of teaching/learning/play
strategies to selected content that will encourage their
development in the young child;
- have become aware of specific issues relevant to child protection.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- Review of appropriate sections of the National Childcare Accreditation Handbook, NSW State Regulations for early childhood services, NSW Risk Assessment Tool, and NSW Personal Development, Health and Physical Education K-6 Syllabus relating to safety and health practices in early childhood settings; - Principles of hygiene and disease prevention; - Environmental safety, covering indoor and outdoor play settings; - Core food groups, nutritional and energy needs of the young child, menu planning, cultural and individual differences; - Aboriginal health issues; - Overview of skills, knowledge and attitudes apparent in a healthy lifestyle, including consumer issues, community health promotion, safety education, and occupational health and safety; - Planning of learning experiences and teaching strategies based on early years curriculum for schools - Child protection definitions, mandatory notifier, possible indicators of abuse.
