Abstract

This subject explores the various concepts, theories, priorities and practices that define community and environmental sustainability within an educational contexts. It further promotes civic responsibility and trust in diverse social and cultural communities. Debates surrounding current meanings for the term sustainability are critiqued and linked to educational perspectives. The management of interactions between social, economic and environmental issues are explored. It also develops the skills to solve new problems using a range of scientific and technology based approaches to create unique solutions to social and environmental issues. Students have the opportunity to specialise in studies of Australian Indigenous education.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
-Be familiar with the various concepts, theories, priorities and practices that define sustainability, citizenship and civics, with a particular focus on contemporary debates concerning children's relationships
-Be able to use a variety of investigative scientific and social research strategies to increase awareness of contemporary debates surrounding sustainability
-Demonstrate practical skills in developing educational experiences that use scientific and social literacy to investigate environmental and community issues related to sustainability and citizenship

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
-The question of sustainability from a variety of perspectives: indigenous, community, environmental, social and cultural. Exploring and developing pedagogical competence in environmental education and enquiry processes. -Conventional and emerging approaches to sustainability: models for scientific inquiry, critical thinking, environmental education. -The question of citizenship from historical, geographical, indigenous, cultural and social perspectives -Promoting sustainable behaviours: reducing human impact on the environment through exploring the impact of population growth, rising living standards and consumerism, increasing energy and water usage, and the loss of natural resources. -Exploring issues in environmental education: Eco-justice, role of government in environmental policy. -Exploring the controversy of managing sustainability in times of political change social change and economic and scientific development. -Questioning what is a sustainable community and a sustainable environment: scientific, economic, environmental, indigenous, social and civic perspectives. -Education and research for sustainable living: developing skills in critical analysis and research.
