EEB425 Reflecting on Professional Practice: Assessment & Reporting (8)

Abstract

This subject will provide opportunities for students to explore professional, ethical and legal responsibilities of primary teachers with regard to the evaluation of teaching and learning and the assessment and reporting of student achievement. Links will be made between this subject and the students' practicum, research and internship experiences. Theoretical and practical aspects of being a beginning and developing teaching professional will underpin all parts of the subject.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- demonstrate an understanding of the professional, legal and ethical requirements of teaching professionals
- demonstrate an understanding of the theory, policies and practices related to assessment of student learning outcomes at the present time
- demonstrate the ability to make appropriate, fair and consistent judgement of student achievement across the primary curriculum
- have described a range of policies affecting their teaching practices
- have identified and acted in accordance with codes of conduct and ethics of the teaching profession
- be able to describe the impact of, and opportunities afforded by, close community engagement.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- Professionalism and professionalising teachers. - Responsibilities and rights of teachers, children, families and communities (with particular attention paid to rural and Indigenous communities). - Departmental and professional Codes of conduct and ethics: - Practices that address issues of assessment - eg consistency in judgement, moderating work samples and planning for authentic assessment of student ability. - Critically examining current issues around assessment in schools, taking into account a range of perspectives. - Assessment processes and practices with reference to current trends in learning and teaching eg the Quality Teaching Framework. - Practice in the use of commonly used assessment tools in NSW primary schools such as CMIT, SWA, BST etc.
