Abstract
From child to adult
This subject explores ways different societies have viewed childhood and adolescence over time, and different perspectives about human growth and development reflecting contemporary beliefs and values. Even before birth genetic and environmental factors influence human growth and development, and from infancy, through childhood, into adolescence and onto emerging adulthood a variety of developmental factors shape the way we experience the world, learn about the world and engage with the world. Understanding human development and the issues underpinning growth, identity, learning, relationships building and the transition to adulthood are significant foundations for any career involving working with people and the wider community.

Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- 1. Show understanding of different cultural views of childhood to adulthood.
- 2. Identify and analyse concepts of human development.
- 3. Analyse and evaluate historical perspectives of human development.
- 4. Demonstrate an understanding of the main theories of human development, their similarities and differences and the main controversies they have generated.
- 5. Understand and analyse the application of developmental and contextual factors in selected human services professions.

SyllabusThe subject will cover the following topics:
- Introducing human development
- Exploring perspectives of human development
- Investigating perceptions of human development over time
- Understanding human development and life stages in practice: physical growth, motor development, cognitive development, social development and personality development
- Analysing issues in human development

Residential SchoolThis subject contains a compulsory 2 day residential school.
Students studying the distance education option will be required to attend two residential schools at the support hub in Dubbo.
Dates:
First Residential School: Tuesday 22 and Wednesday 23 July 2014
Second Residential School: Tuesday 16 and Wednesday 17 September 2014
