Abstract

This subject will extend students' understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of effective teaching and learning in primary classrooms. Drawing on current perspectives, students will explore ways to support learning through the establishment of a quality learning environment and the use of a variety of instructional strategies and designs to meet the diverse needs of individual students. This subject builds on previous subjects to continue student growth in professional and ethical teaching practice.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • - have drawn implications from learning theories and a range of teaching strategies and skills to plan for effective learning experiences in the primary classroom
  • - be able to demonstrate an understanding of the principles for the effective management of the learning environment
  • - have reflected on personal theories about the relationship between teachers' pedagogical practices, classroom conditions and student learning
  • - identify, describe, reflect and act on their own pedagogic practices
  • - have demonstrated an awareness of issues of student diversity as they relate to learning, motivation, and teaching
  • - be able to articulate an awareness of ethical standards of professional teaching practice
  • - be able to demonstrate an understanding of the perspective of other stakeholders in the school community
  • - be able to apply the understandings developed in this subject to the achievement of quality teaching and the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) Graduate Teaching Standards.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
Student centred pedagogy: - Learning theory - Motivation theory - Information processing - Cognitive constructionist - Managing the learning environment. Teacher competencies: - Evidence based practice - Goals and values - Communication skills - Evaluating and assessing teaching & learning. School Communities: - Stakeholders and influences - Parent participation - The politics of school reform. Teacher accountability: - Teaching as a profession - Reflective practice - Action Research as practice - Quality teaching framework.
