Abstract

Abstract
This subject introduces you to the field of child development theory and research. Major theoretical perspectives of development including cognitive, constructivist, behavioural and ecological theories will be explained and applied to educational contexts. Major theories of children's physical, socio-emotional and cognitive development during the primary school years are introduced. Child development theories and contemporary research are applied in understanding individual identity, individual differences, and the role of agency in development and learning. The implications of theoretical and research-based evidence for pedagogical practice are considered.
Observational and other data-gathering techniques will be applied in an authentic case-study relating to a developmental theory or issue, and findings considered in relation to theory and contemporary child development research. The implications for pedagogical practice based on these understandings and findings will be drawn. Mastery of the subject content will be assessed in a final exam.
