EEL419 Introduction to Professional Practice (8)
Abstract
This subject introduces students to the foundational concepts and practices of teaching. Students will use their knowledge and observations of children, classrooms and schools to develop an understanding of the complex nature of the learner and teaching. The subject acknowledges and begins to explore the influence of children's diversity on the learning and teaching process. The subject critically examines assessment practices. With this knowledge students will begin to plan effective, culturally relevant and responsive lessons that recognise diversity and promote equity and social justice. |

- be able to identify and critically examine the rights and responsibilities of teachers in Ontario;
- be able to observe and critically interpret practitioner and learner behaviour;
- be able to outline and develop beginning strategies for creating and sustaining an inclusive and safe learning community;
- be able to critically examine culturally relevant, responsive pedagogies that recognise diversity and promote equity and social justice;
- be able to discuss and apply different pedagogies;
- be able to analyse the elements of effective lesson planning; and
- be able to compare and contrast assessment for, as and of student learning.

SyllabusThe subject will cover the following topics:
- The OCT Standards of Practice and Ethical Standards.
- The rights and responsibilities as teachers in Ontario.
- Strategies for observing and interpreting practitioner and learner behaviour.
- Strategies for creating and sustaining an inclusive learning community - investigate strategies for building a safe classroom environment.
- Diversity, equity and social justice – culturally relevant, responsive pedagogies (including First Nation, Metis, & Inuit, cultural and linguistic diversity, special needs).
- Introductory pedagogical practice.
- Introductory lesson planning.
- Introductory assessment – use of student data, as, for and of.
