EHR109 Introduction to Sport and Exercise Behaviour (8)

Abstract

This subject introduces students to a broad range of psychological theories and research related to human behaviour in sport and exercise settings. This subject explores how psychological factors influence individuals involvement and performance in sport, exercise, and physical activity settings; examines how participation in sport, exercise, and physical activity influences the psychological factors of the individuals involved; analyses the complex interaction between individuals and their environment, and; helps students acquire skills and knowledge about sport and exercise psychology that can be applied as a coach, teacher, personal trainer, exercise leader, sports psychologist, sports rehabilitator, sports administrator or sports journalist.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to analyse and explain key psychological factors influencing participation and performance in sport and exercise;

- be able to explain and critically analyse the complex interaction between individuals and the sport and exercise setting;

- be able to analyse and explain key psychological outcomes of participation and performance in sport and exercise;

- be able to synthesise, evaluate and use selected theoretical and applied approaches to explain sport and exercise behaviour;

- be able to critically analyse how the subject content can inform their anticipated career/employment practices in the sport and exercise context;

- be able to demonstrate their competency in reading, writing, critically analysing, comprehending and discussing sport and exercise psychology literature.

The subject will cover the following topics:

- Overview and introduction to sport and exercise behaviour

- Understanding the participant:

- Personality and sport/exercise behaviour;

- Arousal, anxiety, stress and sport/exercise behaviour;

- Motivation and sport/exercise behaviour;

- Confidence and self-efficacy and sport/exercise behaviour;

- Introduction to psychological skills training.

- Understanding the sport and exercise setting/environment:

- Feedback and reinforcement;

- Competition and cooperation;

- Group and team dynamics;

- Leadership and communication

- Introduction to exercise adherance.

- Psychological outcomes of sport and exercise participation:

- Sport/Exercise and well-being/mental health;

- Youth Sport/Exercise and psychological development;

- Athletic injuries and psychological recovery;

- Addiction to exercise, athletic burnout and their prevention;

- Aggression in sport and implications for practice.
