Abstract

Sports Media 2 gives students an opportunity to develop and apply skills in two areas of sports journalism media. First, students will analyse the use of text, sound and images in modern sports journalism and sports media. Second, the subject requires students to produce their own examples of sports media product using media of their choice.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to compare and contrast the use of text, sound and images in sports media;
  • be able to analyse the construction of narrative in sports media;
  • be able to describe 'good writing' in sports journalism;
  • be able to develop their own ideas about the newsworthiness of sports stories and develop their own 'angles';
  • be able to explain the 'rules' of different genres of sports journalism;
  • be able to plan, develop and produce their own sports journalism product;
  • respond to and implement feedback on their own sports journalism product.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • textual, aural and visual grammar;
  • the elements of writing style;
  • the anatomy of sports journalism genres;
  • finding the write textual, aural and visual tone;
  • writing to deadlines;
  • rural and reginal sports media;
  • landmarks in the history of sport journalism;
  • the greats of sports journalism and what made them great.
