Abstract

This subject deals with prevention, care and rehabilitation of injuries that result from physical activity. Topics covered include the various factors associated with injury, strategies to prevent injury, and the role of exercise in the rehabilitative process.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
be able to:
- recognise the physical and psychological considerations involved in injury prevention and the role of protective athletic devices;
- provide acute care for an injured conscious and unconscious athletic participant;
- understand the mechanisms underlying the healing response and the pathophysiology of musculoskeletal injury;
- determine strategies to prevent injury as well as rehabilitative goals for the injured participant;
- utilise exercise as well as various therapeutic modalities in the rehabilitative process.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- Physical and psychological factors for injury prevention. - Role of sports conditioning and nutrition. - Recreational and competition protective devices. - Emergency procedures and evaluation of athletic injuries. - Wound dressing and taping. - Physiology of the injury response. - Healing of skeletal and soft tissues. - Therapeutic modalities in the rehabilitation program. - Psychological considerations for rehabilitation. - The role of exercise in the rehabilitative process. - Rehabilitation programs for common athletic injuries.
