EHR428 Movement Science Honours Thesis (32)

Abstract

This subject permits students to apply their knowledge of research design and methodology to a problem in an area of movement science identified in Session 1. Under the guidance of their supervisors, students will apply their previously-developed research proposal to recruit participants and collect data, perform appropriate analyses of the data, and correctly evaluate and interpret the results. They will present the findings as a rigorous piece of scientific writing in the form of a journal article, because research is not complete until the results have been disseminated, otherwise the findings are known only to the researchers. The resulting thesis, incorporating an introduction, the literature review from Session 1, the journal article and the conclusions, will be assessed independently by two (2) academic examiners who are expert in the discipline area of the research, preferably at least one (1) being external to Charles Sturt University. Finally, following submission of the thesis, students will present their findings formally to the School of Human Movement Studies and their peers in an oral conference format, where they may anticipate a careful examination of their work and be expected to display a thorough knowledge of all aspects of their study.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

demonstrate competence in the conduct of safe and ethical research;
be able to communicate and interact professionally with supervisors, research participants, scientists and others in a research and scholarly setting;
be able to read scholarly papers and pose appropriate questions related to experimental and qualitative research design and methodology, and conceptual and theoretical context;
be able to synthesise a set of readings from a circumscribed area of the literature and provide a general statement about the state of knowledge and theory within that area;
be able to apply their knowledge of research methodology to the study of a problem in human movement;
demonstrate competence in planning and organising a research project, collecting and analysing data, and managing the project to completion within a given time frame;
write a research article that compiles all the salient aspects of the study that has been conducted and is suitable for publication in a peer-reviewed journal;
have communication and public speaking skills to present the research in a public forum and defend it in response to questions.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:

independent research under supervision of academic staff of the School of Human Movement Studies;
professional communication and interaction with supervisory team and research participants;
scientific writing under supervision of academic staff;
oral presentation of research to a scientific audience.

Specialised Resources

Students will require access to the Exercise and Sport Science Laboratories located on the Bathurst campus, including equipment therein and specific software for both quantitative and qualitative research. Funding will be required for purchase of consumables and/or transcription services related to their research project. At times, it may be necessary for students to travel for data collection purposes.
