EHR510 Exercise Physiology & Health Care Practice (16)

Abstract

This subject involves the detailed examination and application of therapeutic exercise practices. Students are also asked to reflect on a variety of chronic conditions within exercise physiology and health care practice and produce an extended review of literature related to one (1) area of exercise pathology. Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to further develop their knowledge and practical skills and to apply practically, the skills and knowledge gained to date in the course;
  • be able to locate, comprehend, critically analyse, collate and disseminate the clinical exercise scientific literature;
  • be able to demonstrate the capability of making informed judgements of the claims made in original research articles versus the strength of the evidence provided;
  • be able to compile sets of individual data and, where appropriate, aggregate data;
  • be able to demonstrate the ability to assess client needs, design and implement appropriate exercise programs and evaluate client progress;
  • be able to appreciate the effects of organisational behaviour on the delivery of allied health services;
  • be able to demonstrate an awareness of OH&S policies;
  • be able to critique their own and others professional practice; and
  • be able to reflect on their own professional and personal development.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • Preliminary assessment theory and techniques;
  • Client assessment;
  • Interview techniques;
  • Networking within the health industry;
  • Working with a variety of allied health professionals;
  • Reflective practice;
  • Opportunity awareness within the emerging profession of exercise physiologists; and
  • up to 500 hours of professional experience with a registered exercise physiologist.

Residential School

This subject contains a compulsory 5 day residential school. Students studying the Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology (Rehabilitation) are to attend compulsory Residential Schools.  These Residential Schools are 5 days in total.  The Residential Schools will be held on CSU's Bathurst campus. There will be two (2) COMPULSORY Residential School blocks: Residential School 1 (to be held in the CSU Residential period at end of Session 1) will be of three (3) days duration, conducted at the end of Session 1; and Residential School 2 will be of two (2) days duration, conducted at the end of Session 2. Learning design is based on constructive alignment and authentic assessment with the major themes expanded via integrated workshops and students practical competencies assessment via authentic challenges faced by clinical exercise physiologists. Importantly, students will also be provided with opportunities to discuss assignments and to build networks with other students. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure they are able to attend BOTH compulsory Residential Schools. The Residential School provides students with the opportunity to:
  1. engage in a community of practice that shares interest in and commitment to clinical exercise physiology;
  2. participate in scholarly discussion that refines understanding of clinical exercise assessment and the application of exercise prescription to minimise the influence of the target pathology;
  3. apply knowledge of the physiological aspects of clinical assessment and exercise prescription in rehabilitation; and
  4. demonstrate professional competencies related to the field of clinical exercise physiology.

Work Place Learning

This subject contains a Compulsory Workplace Learning component of 72 days duration. Course accreditation requirements mandate that students have completed 500 hours of Practical placement.  This includes 140 hours with apparently healthy persons and 360 clinical hours with persons with chronic conditions.  Where evidence is provided, students will gain recognition of prior learning for any apparently healthy hours previously completed thus students will only be required to complete the balance of hours required to obtain a total of 500 hours. The duration of workplace learning of 72 days was calculated based on a 7 hour working day.

Specialised Resources

Students are to have access to the Exercise Physiology & Functional Rehabilitation Clinic (EPFRC) and other areas of E01 and the Exercise and Sport Science Laboratories (S21) on the Bathurst Campus during Residential School blocks.
