Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
In this subject students review the historical, social and economic perspectives of gaming; observe and examine gaming operations; and consider the operation of food and beverage functions in gaming venues. The focus in this subject is on the role of the hotel manager in the operation of a gaming venue.
A brief historical survey commences with an overview of some striking examples of gambling activities. In lectures, the diversity of the modern gambling industry, incorporating lotteries, sports betting and Internet casinos, is reviewed. The role of government as regulator is contrasted with the perception currently held in some communities of the government as the promoter. Evidence for and against governments performing each of these roles is examined critically.
By examining a number of research studies, an evaluation is made of the arguments about gaming development. The point of view that gaming produces economic benefits for a community is contrasted with the point of view that it produces social disruption. Promotion of gambling as a means of economic revitalisation is compared with the argument that the costs to the community exceed the capacity of the community to pay for them. The student is expected to demonstrate the ability to interpret quantitative and qualitative data resulting from empirical studies in the gambling industry.
In tutorial sessions, students will debate propositions about gambling that they will encounter in their future careers as managers in hotels where there are gaming activities.
To ensure that students are aware of the legal responsibilities of the hotel manager in complexes with gaming, a study is made of the legislative requirements governing the gaming industry. Activities and behaviour that constitute fraud in gaming venues are examined. The duties and liabilities of the hotel manager in situations
