EMA101 Communication through Arts: Birth to Early Stages (8)

Abstract

This subject develops students' understanding of children's acquisition of aesthetic expression and perception in art, music, drama, and dance. Texts, readings and curriculum documents will be examined in relation to the development of effective planning and teaching practices for young children. The subject prepares a student for their first encounters with young children (0-3 years) and develops students' ability to prepare and implement a range of appropriate learning activities for the children 3-5 years. The subject includes a focus on pedagogies for Indigenous Australian education. Students' personal development in the arts will be supported through participation in community projects.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
-Enhance their understanding of music, visual art, drama and dance as modes of expression in various cultural and educational contexts
-Understand the importance that experiences in visual arts, music, drama and dance provide for all children
-Understand the importance of the creative arts in early childhood programs
-Develop their aesthetic awareness
-Have explored materials and equipment pertaining to the creative arts and developed confidence in using a range of musical and artistic activities suitable for children birth-5
-Understand how to encourage creativity and enjoyment of creative arts in young children
-Understand the role of curriculum support materials in the design and delivery of quality early childhood arts programs

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
-Tuned and untuned percussion instruments -Listening, singing and moving -Learning experiences: principles, procedures and strategies -Accessing and using relevant curriculum documents -Expereince with musical instrument/voice -The use of art media for drawing, painting, printmaking, claywork, junk materials, collage, and fabrics. -Sensory awareness through art activities -Developing familiarity and confidence with art media and artistic creation trhough play -Creative dance and movement -Arts in our culture, museums and galleries -Appreciating the arts -Arts resources and activities for under fives -Arts and diverse learners
