EMA301 Creative Arts in the Primary School (8)

Abstract

Students will develop their awareness of how children acquire abilities of aesthetic expression and perception in art, music, drama, media studies and dance. Relevant state curriculum documents will be examined in relation to the development of effective planning and teaching practices in the creative arts. Students will use their knowledge of child development and curriculum content to plan, implement and evaluate developmentally appropriate learning activities for children 5-12 years of age. Students' personal development in the arts will be supported through participation in community arts projects.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
-be able to demonstrate knowledge, skills, aesthetic awareness and understanding of art, music, drama and dance in education
-be familiar with relevant state curriculum documents pertaining to the creative and expressive arts curriculum K-6, and its implementation
-be aware of issues relating to integration of the arts
-have the capacity to build on child initiated experiences in the arts
-be able to successfully plan, implement and evaluate a range of sequential learning experiences in the creative arts, ie, visual arts, music, drama, dance and media studies
-have consolidated their knowledge of the underlying principles and concepts of music, drama, movement, art and media in relation to development levels in children 5-12 years old.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
-Practical musical performance incorporating melodic/non-melodic and percussion instruments, singing and moving, elements of music, organising sound, listening, and performing -Creating and performing sound stories/soundscapes -Arts education programs for children, lesson planning: principles, procedures and strategies for effective and inclusive teaching -Children in art galleries, museums, theatres, exhibitions and other venues for arts interpretation -Creating, designing, developing, directing and managing creative arts-based projects for children -Making, performing and appreciating drama activities which include story-making/telling, improvisation, and play-building -Promoting aesthetic appreciation -The arts and children with diverse needs -Media studies in the primary school -Dance in the primary school; performing, appreciating and composing -Integrated arts in the primary school -Making and appreciating the visual arts -Critiquing the arts curriculum
