EMA303 Creative Arts 2: Content & Context of Creative Arts K-6 (8)

Abstract

In this subject students will further develop the concepts and ideas that underpin the Key Learning Area of the Creative Arts. Students will acquire knowledge, skills, values and attitudes that develop appropriate strategies for planning, programming and teaching Visual Art, Music, Dance and Drama in schools. This subject is the second in a series of subjects in this discipline area, and it focuses on study of the curriculum and pedagogy of this discipline in primary schools.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
-demonstrate knowledge, skills and a range of strategies for teaching, learning and assessing in the K-6 school Creative Arts classroom;
-exemplify competence in the presentation of learning experiences which illustrate a differentiated curriculum that meets the diverse needs of learners in the Creative Arts classroom;
-be able to illustrate understanding of artistic conceptual development through the design of sequenced, integrated lesson sequences as delineated in the NSW Creative Arts syllabus;
-be able to recognise the role, value and place of the Creative Arts key learning area in the broader school curriculum and the relationship between this key learning area and numeracy, literacy and ICT.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
-Investigating and facilitating a sequence of artistic conceptual development learning opportunities, using stage appropriate models of pedagogy, repertoire and assessment. -Understanding the concepts and philosophy underpinning creative arts curriculum that focuses on the need for inclusive practices, cultural awareness and sensitivity. -Integrating outcomes from a range of KLAs into integrated activities managing practical classroom activities in a safe and appropriate way. -Critical reflection on their own creative work and the work of others in a range of contexts, including a contemporary context. -Identify activities to encourage K-6 students to integrate: *performing, composing and appreciating dance; *making, performing and appreciating drama with a focus on improvisation, play building and scripted drama; *performing, listening and organising sound that provides a continuous sequential development of music; *art making and appreciating visual arts practices through the development of skills and ideas. -Concepts in Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts including making and appreciating, performing, organising sound and listening in a range of contexts.
