EMA320 Curriculum Method: Music in the Secondary School (8)

Abstract

This subject provides a candidate with an overview of the field of secondary school music education.  The content of the syllabus will be developed through active participation in the theoretical principles, central concepts and practical understandings of secondary school-based music education.  This will be enhanced through the study of curricular approaches, pedagogical techniques, methodologies, philosophies and learning theories.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- identify and analyse the central concepts of music in relation to music from dominant historical periods, contemporary popular music, and non-Western contexts - develop an understanding of the NSW Secondary Music Syllabus - understand the role of secondary music in the continuum of learning in Creative Arts from K-12, including a particular understanding of the links between Stages 3 and 4. - understand and be able to analyse models of pedagogy for teaching and assessing music in secondary schools - understand how knowledge and skill in music develops through the integration of experiences in performance, improvisation, musicology, aural and composition - develop a range of strategies for teaching and assessing performance, improvisation, musicology, aural and composition in music - be able to design lesson sequences using knowledge of NSW syllabuses and other curriculum frameworks

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
Study Unit 1 – The key concepts and historical contexts of music
- key concepts: duration; pitch; dynamics and expressive techniques; tone; colour; texture and structure - analysis and evaluation of musical works of dominant historical periods, contemporary popular music, and Canadian and non-Western  contexts, using the key concepts
  Study Unit 2 – The four disciplines in the secondary music classroom
- defining, teaching and assessing: performance, composition, musicology and aural disciplines
- integrating the four disciplines with the concepts
- the continuum of disciplines and concepts in K-12
- models of pedagogy in music education

Study Unit 3 –Creation of music: varying approaches
- music of varying genres, cultures and historical periods
- composition as a springboard to other disciplines
- composition as a tool in performance and aural training
- analysis of compositions
- standard notation
- improvisation
