Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:
-demonstrate an understanding of Australian society, history and culture and the impact of these upon Australian identity in a global context;
-have a broad and critical knowledge and understanding of the range of academic disciplines related to HSIE, including recent theory and practice;
-have been introduced to the NSW HSIE syllabus, and its role and value within the broader school curriculum, and of the relationship between HSIE, other KLAs and ICT;
-have refined and extended the understanding of the processes of inquiry and the ways in which these are developed in children;
-have participated in a range of strategies for teaching and assessing primary HSIE which are appropriate to meet the needs of a diverse group of learners.

SyllabusThe subject will cover the following topics:
-A timeline of people in Australia - shared history, cultural diversity and social systems.
-Exploring local histories in HSIE.
-Civics education.
-Human Rights Education.
-The NSW HSIE syllabus, its disciplinary background, structure and its place in the broader school curriculum (K-12).
-Skills of acquiring information, using an inquiry process and social and civic participation.
-Pedagogies relevant to teaching and assessing HSIE.
-Literacy and numeracy in HSIE.
-ICT in HSIE.
