EMH204 HSIE Curriculum: Exploring Australian Identity (8)

Abstract

This subject prepares students to teach in the Key Learning Area (KLA) of Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE) in primary schools. Students use social, cultural and historical perspectives to explore Australian identity within a global context, centring on using an inquiry methodologies approach.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
-demonstrate an understanding of Australian society, history and culture and the impact of these upon Australian identity in a global context;
-have a broad and critical knowledge and understanding of the range of academic disciplines related to HSIE, including recent theory and practice;
-have been introduced to the NSW HSIE syllabus, and its role and value within the broader school curriculum, and of the relationship between HSIE, other KLAs and ICT;
-have refined and extended the understanding of the processes of inquiry and the ways in which these are developed in children;
-have participated in a range of strategies for teaching and assessing primary HSIE which are appropriate to meet the needs of a diverse group of learners.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
-A timeline of people in Australia - shared history, cultural diversity and social systems. -Exploring local histories in HSIE. -Civics education. -Human Rights Education. -The NSW HSIE syllabus, its disciplinary background, structure and its place in the broader school curriculum (K-12). -Skills of acquiring information, using an inquiry process and social and civic participation. -Pedagogies relevant to teaching and assessing HSIE. -Literacy and numeracy in HSIE. -ICT in HSIE.
