EMS418 Curriculum Studies: Science & Technology (8)

Abstract

This subject is designed to give students a deeper understanding of what is involved in the teaching of science and technology in the primary school. Discipline knowledge, practical models of pedagogy and assessment will be explicated throughout this subject. Students will be guided in the construction of their own practice so that they can become confident practitioners in primary science and technology.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- understand science discipline knowledge in context with a range of topics in the NSW Science and Technology K-6 Syllabus
- understand and use the concepts of pedagogical content knowledge, curriculum integration, the 5Es planning model and productive/authentic pedagogies (NSWQT) in curriculum design
- be ble to use inquiry and problem solving strategies to address content knowledge deficits
- appreciate the nature of authentic technology education in the primary school
- understand assessment and evaluation procedures relevant to science and technology
- use the 'design, make and appraise' heuristic in primary science and technology lessons
- be able to design and evaluate practical science activities suitable for primary grades
- appreciate the role of science and technology in the primary curriculum.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- The nature of science and technology and the relationship between them - Science and Technology discipline knowledge in context - Curriculum design and development (including integrated approaches) - Pedagogical approaches and their applications to learning in science and technology - Approaches to assessment and evaluation - Problem-based learning - Demands of the NSW K-6 Science and Technology Syllabus.
