Abstract

This subject is designed to introduce students to a number of concepts associated with Technology and Technology Education. Key concepts include the nature of technology, the relationship between science, technology and society, technological literacy, the design process in technology, debates about the nature of technology education and the place of design and technology in secondary schools. These concepts, as they relate to mandatory technology studies in the secondary schools, are explored in the curriculum.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- have compared the various definitions of technology;
- have organised a range of relationships between science, environment, technology and society;
- have developed a personal view of technological literacy;
- be able to explain the processes associated with design and its relationship to technology curriculum;
- be able to outline the debates associated with the nature of technology education;
- be able to use the processes of designing and producing to complete a design project;
- be able to safely use the technologies, model making and mixed materials, to complete a design project;
- be able to describe the place of the Technology and Applied Studies Key Learning Area in schools;
- be able to plan teaching activities associated with mandatory technology syllabi in the high school curriculum
- have reflected on teaching in a TAS faculty in a secondary school

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- Nature of Technology - Relationship between Science, Technology, Environment and Society - Design process, design briefs and design related content - Design projects and portfolios - Occupational Health and Safety - Occupational Health and Safety as it relates to model making and missed materials technology - Technological Literacy - The Technology and Applied Studies KLA - Nature of Technology education in the mandatory component of school curriculum - Planning teaching activities in mandatory technology
