EMT302 Understanding and Using New Technologies (8)

Abstract

This subject will examine trends, issues and ideas that underpin learning and communication through new technologies. It is designed to facilitate the use of technology in an education-based learning/constructivist perspective rather than in a hardware/programming perspective. Throughout this subject, students will gain hands-on experience in working through the understanding of using technology appropriately in educational settings, with a special emphasis on integrating technology into the curriculum as well as other applications related to communications and creative opportunities/expression. Students will practice critical evaluation and effectiveness in changes in technology to remain current. Throughout this subject students will model an "approach" (versus avoidance) attitude towards technology, to develop a supportive role and/or instruct learners in the use of technology to enhance learning.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- demonstrate knowledge, skills and confidence in using technology in a learning environment;
- understand basic terms and concepts relating to technology in education;
- describe and comment upon current research into the use of technology in education;
- reflect on different beliefs in relation to the use of technology in education and critically analyze how these may impact on educational practices;
- evaluate the appropriateness of different approaches to using technology in teaching and learning;
- explain the impact of technology on teaching and learning;
- critique software for educational use as well as software for the purpose of assessment;
- show an in-depth understanding of how technology affects communication in educational environments; and
demonstrate the understanding and skills related to the integration of technology into learning and teaching environments (e.g., be able to select, critique and evaluate content and appropriate technology).

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- how technology impacts on learning and development in all domains; - how various modes of communications are supported through technology; - exploring current research into the use of technology in education; - evaluating personal attitudes towards technology as it relates to an educational environment; - using e-mail, the Internet, multimedia resources and ways of integrating these forms of technology into the classroom; - how to compile an electronic professional portfolio (E-Portfolio); - technology in the curriculum and critical reflection on its effectiveness; - appropriate selection of technology and software to support children's learning (e.g., selecting and critiquing content and appropriate technology); - preparing and arranging for a technology-friendly educational environment; - understanding and skills related to the "appropriate" integration of technology into learning and teaching environments; - creating useful resources for integrating technology components in learning and teaching environments; and, - exploring, in depth, technology applications relevant to specific teaching areas and levels.
