EPT123 Implementing Professional Knowledge in TAS Classrooms (8)

Abstract

This subject enables students to explore the professional relationships between discipline knowledge, workshop management and classroom practice. Students will make links between discipline knowledge and the procedural knowledge associated with materials and tools management, WH&S and risk management procedures and project creation in the practical workshop environment. In addition, students will complete 18 days professional experience program addressing issues of teaching and learning and classroom planning.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • understand the way in which materials are purchased and managed in terms of cost and environmental sustainability issues in school workshops;
  • know how to plan and carry out risk management analysis and procedures;
  • be conversant with all aspects of WH&S in school workshops, including legislative, administrative and organisational requirements;
  • be able to manage students in a workshop environment;
  • demonstrate ability to plan and implement a sequence of lessons;
  • successfully complete an 18 day professional experience placement;
  • critically reflect on their development as a teacher;
  • establish learning goals for subsequent professional placements;
  • respond to national graduate teaching standards.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • Managing and planning in workshop and practical environments.
  • Purchasing and managing materials resources for workshops in terms of cost and environmental issues.
  • Risk management, Child Protection, emergency care and anaphylaxis training.
  • Maintaining tools and equipment.
  • Managing a diverse range of adolescents in practical environments.
  • The collaborative nature of teachers work and the inter-related work practices in a TAS Faculty.
  • Procedural and professional knowledge in becoming a teacher.
  • The National Graduate Teaching Standards as both personal and the professions’ benchmarks of Teaching performance, Ethical and professional behaviour in classrooms, in professional settings, with parents and the Community.

Work Place Learning

This subject contains a Compulsory Workplace Learning component of 18 days duration. 18 day professional experience placement in a secondary school Technology Faculty.
