EPT321 Middle School Pedagogy in Practice: Junior Secondary (8)

Abstract

In this subject pre-service teachers will be given the opportunity to teach in their secondary school specialized teaching area. Preservice teachers will learn the nature of curriculum models of teaching and learning, and explore these for planning within a secondary-school environment. Students will undertake a 25 days placement in a secondary school to evaluate, devise, and utilise appropriate teaching strategies and resources that benefit secondary-school pupils. In addition, this subject provides opportunities to experience 5 days working with adolescents outside the classroom environment.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- Demonstrate pedagogical content knowledge for specialized teaching area;
- Explore a range of culturally appropriate resources;
- Demonstrate an awareness of current models of teaching and learning in secondary school settings;
- Be able to design and teach lessons for a range of learners in secondary school settings, with stage 4/5 focus;
- Engage in critical enquiry and dialogue in collaboration with supervising teacher about curriculum and teaching practices in secondary schools;
- Utilise information and communication technology resources where appropriate;
- Program, plan and teach from curriculum and support documents;
- Engage with parents, care givers and broader community;
- Develop classroom management strategies appropriate for secondary schools; and,
- Demonstrate an awareness and appreciation of community service providers and young people in community settings.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- Twenty-five day placement in a secondary school setting that includes assisted teaching with whole class and small groups and a five day placement in a diverse setting - Policy documents such as Occupational Health and Safety, Discipline & Behaviour, Religion & Excursions - Strategies for establishing partnerships with parents and community including those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds - Reflective practice associated with lesson planning preparation implementation and. evaluation - Review professional teaching standards and connection to a teaching framework - Working with support staff - Developing units of work and teaching plans that embody a literacy focus and incorporate the effective use of literacy strategies.
