EPT420 Integrated Curriculum (8)

Abstract

This subject develops students' knowledge of and competence in curriculum and planning for teaching and learning in the middle and upper years of Primary School. It explores conceptual frameworks and practical means for implementing an integrated approach to curriculum. Four weeks professional experience in Years 3 to 6 of Primary School forms a component of this subject.

Entry into the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood)/Bachelor of Primary Education Studies courses or as determined by the course coordinator.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- demonstrate a sound understanding of the nature and implications of curriculum as it applies to the middle and upper years of Primary/Elementary School;
- understand the features of Stages 2 and 3 in the K-6 syllabus documents of the educational authority for their state/territory/province;
- plan an integrated unit of work for children in Years 3-6 of Primary School;
- demonstrate further ability at planning, implementation, and evaluation of teaching and learning within a school setting, culminating in full-time teaching in the final week of the professional experience;
- demonstrate an understanding of the importance of contextual factors such as Aboriginality and rurality when planning an integrated unit of work.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- Stage 2 and 3 (children aged 7-12) syllabus and support documents for each of the six key learning areas. - Subject matter, skills, understandings, learning processes, values, and attitudes relevant to stages 2 and 3. - Review and extension of teaching/learning strategies for the middle and upper years of school. - Resources for teaching. - Sequencing of lessons for stage 2 and 3 subject areas. - Theories and frameworks of curriculum integration. - Content areas that lend themselves to curriculum integration. - Creation of a series of lessons that integrate three or more key learning areas.
