Abstract| This subject introduces students to the teaching profession, primary education specifically, and enables them to explore their suitability for teaching through observation and hands-on experiences. It explores classroom practice in terms of appropriate structuring of teaching-learning experiences. The subject encourages and scaffolds the preservice teacher to develop critical awareness of their professional needs in order to respond to the complex roles and responsibilities with which they will engage. This subject involves a 10 day placement in a school setting where preservice teachers will be required to undertake a number of teaching tasks. |

Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- have developed their understanding of the profession through an interrogation of the public perception of teaching and schooling
- show an an understanding of the attributes and responsibilities of effective learners and teachers
- have demonstrated an awareness of the skills of critical reflection as a feature of professional learning
- successfully complete a 10 day school placement
- demonstrate basic skills in planning, teaching and evaluation
- be aware of the professional responsibilities, community expectations and ethics related to primary school teaching
- have developed an understanding of the language, structures and practices of modern primary schools and classrooms
- be developing a range of skills and strategies relevant to the social, affective and cognitive demands of practice as a primary school teacher
- demonstrate a developing level of understanding of the primary school curriculum
- have demonstrated a developing sense of the role of ICT in both professional practice and in the curriculum in primary schools. |

SyllabusThe subject will cover the following topics:
- Professional practice in the modern classroom - issues, demands, and personal challenges - including Professional teaching standards and ICT.
- Historical and sociological investigation of professional practice and the school and classroom.
- Public perception of the teaching profession as generated by multimedia images.
- Mandatory Child Protection training
- Observing, interpreting and critiquing action in the classroom.
- Planning, preparation, teaching and evaluating ? reflective strategies in learning to teach.
- Relationship development in schools and classrooms.
- The primary school curriculum: range, scope and sequence.
- 10 day teaching practicum.
- Principles of effective pedagogy.
