EPT451 Foundations 4: Practicum Seminar (8)

Abstract

The Practicum Seminar subject occurs in an elementary education setting and is complemented by interactions with faculty and peers. Candidates are supported in extending their professional knowledge and instructional practice. They will explore the principles of planning with the end in mind, being mindful of the need to differentiate instruction to address the needs of a wide range of learners. Candidates will investigate assessment strategies and begin to examine how to use information gathered through assessment to inform their instructional planning and begin to use a reflective approach to improving their practice.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

  • demonstrate the ability to plan and deliver a sequence of lessons effectively;

  • engage in a reflective approach to improve their practice; and
  • demonstrate responsibility and service by contributing to the larger school community.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • Furthering candidates’ understanding and application of the Ontario College of Teachers’ Standards of Practice and Ethical Standards.
  • Extending understanding of inclusive learning communities.
  • Exploring a reflective approach to practice.
  • Examining the concept of planning with the end in mind.
  • Using authentic assessment.
  • Planning and delivering differentiated lessons.
  • Articulating and modelling strategies for developing positive professional relationships.
  • Identifying ways to promote constructive parent engagement and effective communication.
  • Investigating diverse roles in, and related to, education.
  • Preparing to enter education-related professions.
  • Using a portfolio to document and demonstrate learning.

Work Place Learning

This subject contains a Compulsory Workplace Learning component of 35 to 45 days duration. Candidates will work with a teacher mentor who is teaching in an elementary education setting. Candidates will be actively involved observing and interacting with students in the classroom, and be involved in teaching, including differentiated instruction. Each week they will observe the modelling of their mentor, deconstruct learning activities, and plan and implement learning opportunities with the support and guidance of their teacher mentor.
