Abstract

In this subject students will understand and be able to debate the philosophical, political and structural foundations of the legislation and policies related to school operations. The theories, models and strategies for effective decision-making, problem solving and communication will be related to the implementation of change. Students will be able to contrast a range of leadership approaches to build and sustain learning communities that support diversity, safe schools and character education within the legal requirements. Students who complete the subject will be educational leaders who have the knowledge and ability to promote the success of all students by leading the organisation, managing the operations and resources in a way that promotes a safe and effective learning environment.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to debate the philosophical, political and structural ideas that underpin legislation and policies related to school operations;
- be able to examine theories, models and strategies for effective decision making, problem solving, and communication and relate this to implementing change;
- be able to demonstrate knowledge and its application with respect to legal requirements of a principal;
- be able to analyse and compare different leadership skills and styles as a means of reflection on personal leadership approaches;
- be able to contrast a range of leadership approaches in creating positive school cultures through effective supervision, evaluation and support of staff;
- be able to critically analyse the governance structures of publicly funded education systems;
- be able to explore and apply the theory and practice of conflict resolution and mediation skills;
- be able to critically examine the role of the principal in responding to individual student needs that meet relevant legislation, processes and ethical standards; and
- be able to assess a range of policies, programs and skills required to build and sustain learning communities that support diversity, safe schools and character education.
