ESL172 Language and Learning Skills (8)

Abstract

In this CSU-TPC subject students will develop the skills and knowledge required to research, write, evaluate and present information ethically in a further study context. Students will also identify their personal learning styles and develop a plan for skill development for future learning and career development.

Assumed Knowledge

Normally applicants will have Year 12 or equivalent, however applicants with other educational backgrounds will also be considered.

Restricted to students enrolled in the CSU Pathway Program - Diploma of General Studies.

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • Learning styles identification and utilisation
  • Preparation for study
  • Purposes of writing
  • Writing styles and text types
  • Referencing - Harvard/APA/Plagiarism
  • Planning your writing - mind maps, note taking, research skills and techniques
  • How to write a report
  • How to write an essay
  • Creative writing
  • How to give an oral presentation
  • Identify skills and gaps in career paths and develop a plan for future options

Residential School

This subject contains a compulsory 5 day residential school. Students studying the distance education option are required to attend two face-to-face residential schools at the support hub in Dubbo, including a three day orientation at the start of the course.

First Residential School/Orientation-  Tuesday 25, Wednesday 26, Thursday 27 February 2014.
  Second Residential School - Tuesday 18 and Wednesday 19 March 2014
